This version is a sketch/demo recording. I'd like to produce a more fully orchestrated and polished studio version in the near future.
This song began as a jazzy waltz-time bassline years ago, before I played bass, before I considered myself to compose songs. At the time I began writing melody and lyrics entirely different from the music you hear here, but with a related theme. I called it Close to Your Heart, and its lyrics dealt with how we sometimes foolishly "abuse or betray, or you just disregard, so myopic you miss what's so close to your heart..."
Years later, a while after I began playing bass, I remembered this bassline and began to write the song anew. It was during a time in which I was struggling to understand and deal with some momentous life decisions I'd made, like studying and working for years to be a corporate lawyer, that I realized were not at all the direction in which I wanted to go. I began to learn that accepting, embracing, and reaching for what you really want can be a huge logistical challenge, and even more difficult emotionally, when you've invested yourself completely in something that is... not it. Back to Your Heart is an encouragement to face up to the challenge and live the life you want whatever it takes.
How much time will we spend
denying the things we've known
all along inside?
The best and brightest work
day and night justifying the lies
that we all hide behind
How does this society
qualify to be telling you
what is wrong and right?
You alone decide if it's bona fide
when you open your mind
deep and wide, and you just
Lead your life
back to your heart
Though it might seem there's
not enough time,
it's never too late to start
Pay yourself in kind
Loose the ties that bind
'cause we must divide
to unite sometimes
It's a bumpy ride
when worlds collide
If you find the right key
then they'll all harmonize
Is the irony that your fantasy
scares you off by starting
to come alive?
It's an uphill climb until
you dive for the prize
then you'll rise and take flight
when you just
Lead your life
back to your heart
Though it might seem there's
not enough time,
it's never too late to start
People gonna tell you that
life's not the way to go
Take a look around you,
just what do they know?
The greatest gift you have
only you can discover
Add up the sum, you can run,
but you can't hide from what you
were born to do
Lead your life
back to your heart
Though it might seem there's
not enough time,
it's never too late to start
Shine your light
into the dark,
and with the courage to
open your eyes,
you might see what you are
